I have scoliosis

First of all, what is scoliosis?

is an abnormal lateral (side-to-side) curvature of the spine. Here are the warning signs to look out for.
  • Shoulders are different heights—one shoulder blade is more prominent than the other
  • Head is not centered directly above the pelvis
  • Appearance of a raised, prominent hip
  • Rib cages are at different heights
  • Uneven waist
  • Changes in look or texture of skin overlying the spine (dimples, hairy patches, color changes)
  • Leaning of entire body to one side
I got the information from

So I have this condition since I was 14, but I only seek treatment 4 years after when everyone started noticing that my waist is very uneven. See I was a competitive swimmer during my teen years and uneven waist is very evident due to the fact that I'm wearing a swimsuit every afternoon.

You're probably wondering what could happen to someone with scoliosis. Well I want to speak from experience yet you can find a lot of information online. The most inconvenient effect of scoliosis to me is the tightening of my muscles. I have constant pain on my shoulders and back, it feels as if the muscles between my spine and shoulder blades cannot move due to the lack of space. The curve of my spine is an inverted S that is why my right shoulder hurts more.

Creating this blog entry made me realize that I really should see a doctor as soon as possible to have my scoliosis checked again. Wearing a brace would not bother me as long as it can be concealed by my shirt. Until my next doctor's appointment, I resort to stretching yoga poses to minimize the pain on my back.
